Time flies by and we are in 2010 already. Aydin will turn 2 next mth and not long after that i will turn 30. Yeap, the big 3 is finally here and now i will have all the reasons in the world to buy those big bikes, the small cars and err the skinny jeans oh yeahhh!. Once upon a time the thought of turning 30 scared the sh*t of me but actually its not that bad. i think i am quite happy with what god have given us and could not ask for anything more. Furthermore I dont think it will make a difference physically as some of the new grads already think i am at least 33...(damn u grads hehe)...it must be the wisdom..must be, must be.

Anyway i have been quite lazy updating the blog mainly bcos i got a few things going on and problem is when u try to juggle lots of things..some will drop such as blog, photography, golf but some will increase such as weight, waist size and toys collection hehe. That pretty much summarized my 2009 at least from the hobby point of view. Talking about weight, its actually not as bad, reality started to kick in during our last trip to Singapore early this year. when my favourite shopping place told me they dont carry that size in their outlet. This explained the comeback to the squash court, the long distance run, the gym and the workout dvds and so far i managed to maintain a decent weight but still so far away from my pre-wed weight.

On a more positive note, my collection grew quite significantly this year. I have been quite good with controlling my temptation to buy more toys until i discovered that the Bigbadtoys website deliver to Brunei and the opening up of the new Toys and Collectibles shop in Brunei late this year. The half filled cabinet is now full and i am running out of space to display all this "priceless" and "antique" collection of mine. This is indeed areas for improvement this year and i believed i could be more "lean" in my approach of buying these things and currently already devising strategies to link it to personal rewards for achieving some personal targets : ). Besides these kinda things will make it easier to justify to the Ministry of Home Affairs...*Wink* *Wink*

Enough of my ramblings and now to the real stuff i.e. my target for this year. I believed if you set your mind to do something, your action whether you realize it or not will actually lead to the attainment of those goals. On a second thought maybe best to keep this to myself but it mainly centered around the stuff i spoke about just now..weight, health, families, hobbies, finance, career, spiritual and travel. The key here is to make small steps changes and to be able to stick to whatever rules, threshold, boundaries, target set in the first place.

With that i wish you all the best and may this year bring more happiness and success. patience and wisdom and blessings from the Al-Mighty. Amin

10 ways to get motivated in 2010

CNN) -- A new decade is about to start, and you may be tempted to set a copious list of resolutions for yourself in order to broadly "make life better."

You may be thinking that you'll jump in on January 1 to reform everything from diet to relationships to personality.

That, experts say, is the wrong approach. It's great to want to make changes, but in order to actually accomplish your goals, they say, it's important to be realistic, specific, and accountable.

Here are 10 things you can do to help yourself stay in a mindset to make positive changes in the coming year:

1. Set smaller goals with smaller steps

Gradual small steps motivate people toward larger change, said Susan Nolen-Hoeksema, professor of psychology at Yale University and author of the new book "The Power of Women."

If you want to lose weight, for example, change small aspects of your eating pattern. Resolve to have a salad tomorrow for lunch, and then do that for a week.

Write down the steps you want to take in a datebook to make it concrete, and reward yourself for making the individual changes, she said.

Let's say you want to work on being more optimistic this year. Nolen-Hoeksema recommends imagining what you would be like if you were optimistic. Imagine yourself going through a day at work if you were optimistic and confident, then write that down in great detail.

Now, you have specific aspects of that ideal of optimism to work toward. Pick one thing that the optimistic you is doing that you're not, and start working in that direction, she said.

2. Frame your goals positively

Despite the proven health risks of certain habits, such as smoking, thinking about a habit in the negative will not help you nix it. Studies have shown that it's hard to get motivated about avoiding cancer, but easier to think about smelling better and saving money as reasons to quit smoking, Nolen-Hoeksema said.

So, if you want to quit doing something, think about the positive aspects of not doing it. And make sure you reward yourself for sticking to the plan along the way.

3. Look at the pros and cons

If you're on the fence about whether you should make a change this year, make a list of the benefits and costs, said Dr. Nadine Kaslow, professor of psychiatry at Emory University.

Pay attention to what's driving you, she said. Sometimes it's pain that motivates people to change, or a new phase of life, or new information, or a possible promotion.

"It helps to get clear about what you want to change and why you want to change it," she said.

4. Get a resolutions buddy

Knowing that someone else is working toward similar goals, or is supporting you in your endeavors, helps to keep motivation up. Having a new year's resolution buddy who's keeping track of your progress helps keep you accountable for what you've done.

At the end of every year, Kaslow and her friend review all of their goals from the prior year, examining what the obstacles were to change and then developing new goals for the next year.

Planning for goals with someone can guide you in the path towards change, even if you don't don't accomplish everything in a single year, she said.

5. Be specific

It's easy to get discouraged by a broad goal like "I'm going to improve my marriage," Nolen-Hoeksema said. Figure out exactly what it is that's not working for you, and then formulate a strategy for solving individual problems.

In the marriage example, it's important to get realistic about what it is about your marriage that needs improvement. Then, spend some time keeping a diary and tracking what's going right and what's not, and come up with one thing you can do per week that would help the situation.

The process of assessing the small actions you can take in the immediate future, and savoring the positive effects, can take a lot of pressure off and help you achieve larger goals, she said.

6. Know thyself

The start of the year is as good a time as any to take inventory of yourself. What are your passions? What do you want to be doing better? Take the time think about who you are and how you want life to be, said Craig Levine, a clinical psychologist in San Francisco, California.

Real change happens because you yourself want it, not because others want it for you, experts say.

"If it's something that doesn't connect to you and truly relate to you, just because someone says you should do something, if it doesn't resonate with you, it's not going to be as helpful as something that truly fits you," Levine said.

7. Examine deeper issues

Sometimes there are problems that need to be addressed before people can move forward with the change they want.

In some cases there are psychological impediments to making changes, Levine said. For example, some people fear failure so much that they unknowingly sabotage themselves. Self-esteem may also play a role -- some people don't feel they're worthy of being taken care of, he said.

If you think that there are deeper issues preventing you from moving forward in your life in some way, consult a mental health professional.

8. Don't be overanxious

Having a long list of lofty resolutions can create anxiety, so Nolen-Hoeksema recommends choosing anywhere between three and five overarching things to change.

For Kaslow, the word "resolution" connotes a "pass-fail" ultimatum, so she prefers using the word "goal."

Writing down your goals and how you plan to achieve them is a good way to beat anxiety, Levine said.

9. Be flexible

Although you should be specific about what you want to do, sometimes it helps to broaden your vision of what you're trying to accomplish. For instance, if you've been laid off from your job in the financial sector, it may not be immediately possible to find a similar position.

But if you are on the job market, the broader goal might be to support yourself or your family, Nolen-Hoeksema said. Having a wider vision of what constitutes success can free you up to explore other options that do help with the central purpose.

"Step back and say, 'Is there any way I can achieve that bigger goal without getting fixated on the goal I had before?'" she said.

10. Keep your eye on the ball

Changing behaviors is especially difficult when other people around you encourage habits you're trying to kick, or if you are under stress. For instance, if you're a recovering alcoholic and having a bad day, it might be hard to resist if someone says, "It looks like you need a drink," Kaslow said.

Know that there's going to be some anxiety, but be patient with yourself, Kaslow said. Take it one incident at a time, one day at a time.

"You have to deal with some negative consequences when you change, both internal and interpersonal, and environmental," she said. "You have to sort of get help dealing with those, and weather those storms."

Here is some treat for the sky watchers, as today, the12th December, the world will witness the brightest full moon ever. The moon to appear today is about 30 percent brighter and 14 percent larger than the other full moons seen in the year 2008.

This phenomenon is because the moon is much closer to the earth than usual, on its egg-shaped circle around the earth. When it get closer to the earth it is perigee and when farthest from earth it is apogee. The two points occur once every year , but the moon's exact distance varies over the years.

"Typically, we don't have the full moon phase and perigee coinciding at the same time, so that makes this event particularly special," said Ed Krupp, director of the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles, California. Today's event will be the closest lunar perigee since 1993, at 221,560 miles (356,566 kilometers) from Earth. This unusually close perigee is expected to have a direct effect on the tides on earth.

"While high tides happen each month when the sun, Earth, and the moon are aligned, there is going to be an enhanced effect, with the moon being the closest it's been in more than a decade," said Ben Burress, staff astronomer at the Chabot Space and Science Center in Oakland, California.

"This would result in extra-large tides in regions that are susceptible to them, like Nova Scotia's Bay of Fundy," he added. The moon will appear larger today due to its closeness to the earth and will be most noticeable as it rises above the horizon at sunset. That's when an optical illusion usually comes into play that makes the full moon seem larger, set against familiar Earthly objects, than when it's higher in the empty sky.

"This combination of the moon illusion and close perigee gives sky-watchers a chance to see the biggest and fullest moon rise possible," Burress said. This vent can be viewed across the globe with out any instruments.

"If you are charmed by the idea of seeing the biggest and brightest full moon visible in 15 years, be ready to go outside at sunset and watch for the rising moon in the east," said Krupp.

Its been a while since i reviewed any movies mainly because haven`t been to one since Aydin was born 6 months ago. However managed to get hold of a clear copy of the latest Adam Sandler movie Zohan last week and decided to give it a shot. Here is my verdict..a truly classic depiction of how one can utilize one`s asset to one`s advantage. A story of a man who have a dream, an idea and a big head but sadly unable to utlize any of them. He however overcome this obstacles and managed to find a niche to be successful in a very competitive business. hehe. Deep eh...watch it and this will all make sense..

A friend told me a real story about "Kelupis Panggang" that really cracked me up last weekend. A story of a bunch of Japanese colleagues who were invited to attend a Nikah function somewhere in BSB few months back. It was tea time and the food served was the typical Bruneian high tea dishes i.e. Mee goreng, curry daging, colorful keks and Kelupis panggang, The kelupis panggang were chopped into small parts supposedly for guests convenience and for all to share.

The healthy conscious Japanese bunch obviously picked something that looked really familiar and the crowd only noticed the problem after one of them choked in the camp. Dont think i have to explain what happened and was glad that nobody gets hurt in the process..hehhee

They were two Thursdays that i hated the most: one is in mid February and one in Mid July. The second one is coming up tomorrow and i know that some of my work colleagues are having sleepless night and nightmares as i speak (blog). It is no other than the our bloody CIMA exam results. Opening up the office outlook on Thursday morning can be really terrifying as your work-life balance for the next few months is really at the mercy of the examiners. Went through all that and glad that its all down the memory lane. Whatever the results gna be guys, do not give up and keep on trying. Its all part of the game and wish you all the best!

Despite feeling unwell, forced myself out of bed really early this morning to join the BSRC shutterbugs for His Majesty`s B`day parade function at SOAS. It was truly a joyful event filled with colours and vibrance. I honestly think that they were more photographers than spectators as the whole town was filled by Men with Nikons ( and a few Canonians) hehe.

What amazed me most was the fact that they were a lot our "warga emas" dressed up in their best looking outfit walking around the SOAS area together celebrating our ruler`s B`day. Tons of photo opportunities from street photography, men in uniforms, candid shots and best of all up close and personal with Meriam Katak shots. A once off experience and promise to myself will never ever gna be that close again to that monster as my ear /brain almost explode when they first ignite the canon.

Last but not least Daulat Kebawah Duli Tuan Patik and salute to all the men/ladies in uniform that made the event this morning a big success!

No wonder pakai headphone!

Attended a company sponsored course on Creativity and Innovation sometime last week. It was interesting as we got to do a lot of "out of the box" kinda activities which really tested our brain capacity. Its quite depressing to note that how our brain lost its creativity as we aged. As a child creativity dominates the way we think and it will reduce to 40% by the age of 30 and will only be less than 2% at the age of 50. Thus its quite important to keep that think brain of ours working by doing some simple brain exercise like drawing, using variety of colours in your writing and some silly things like going to the toilet with eyes close in your own home, writing with your non dominance hand or even be more adventurous when it comes to food testing.

As for me i was just laughing my brain off the whole time during the course as people just cant stop coming up with silly creative ideas. Amongst one of them is this girl with this Canadian accent whom the team was asked to come up with an analogy or metaphor on rubber band. She cracked us up really hard when she innocently mention "Seperti Bu"R"ung and Rubber Band. She meant it well as she was just trying to say that kids always kill a bird using a slingshot which is made of rubber band. Obviously that's not how some creative minds in the room interpret that gesture.

The other one that i cant forget must also be this veteran lady who is quite conservative in nature. She is no fun and was not surprise why the boss sent her to this course. Anyway she also cracked me up with her consistent soft whispering from the back of the room" Ketulahan" every time people coming up with new ideas. Cakes with the shape of a shoe...ketulahan, Traditional dance with some twist of modern move..ketulahan...emblem function in jungle pun ketulahan! Thinking abt it Creativity is act of ketulahan as you need to be a bit wacky to come up with some really creative ideas..no?

It was hot...it was tiring..but it was fun. One by one..my cousins slowly are joining the married men geng and hopefully the daddy`s club. Now i understand why pro wedding photogs need at least two cameras on standby at all time...group photo with a 70-200 lens almost cost me my dignity as i almost fell down the drain trying to capture that last person on the left..cheh!

Break down (Break daun)

We have had our quarterly safety talk at the office today and this time it featured Road Safety. The safety team invited the dudes from Megamas co. who are supposedly specialists on this topic. I had the opportunity to ask about the practice practiced by us Bruneians to stick leaves on the back of their car as a sign of car breakdown.

Their answer was there is no safety guidelines in Brunei indicating so but its just a Bruneian methophorical way to say my car rosak i.e. breakdown ( Break daun) and hence the sticking leaves on the back of their car...geddit? Hehe.
